Newtown Poems by Indran Amirthanayagam

            First Poems

There are murders that defy poetry,
challenge its song--I almost wrote
to a duel—ask  what business
do you have with us in the church,
in this memorial mass.

The children who died wrote
their first and last poems.
We do not know the metaphors
paralyzed, as teachers pushed
their charges into closets,

behind bookcases to safety,
before getting shot, plans
the Miss’s had made
for evenings, birthdays,
weddings to come?

           Questions

This Newtown slaughter,
first graders learning to read

and write, teachers,
principal, psychologist,

adults, women entirely,
nurturing elementary

education, now rest
of the country and world,

the human family
in anger and sadness:

What beast roared
at innocents?

Why let him out
to murder us?

            Indran Amirthanayagam, December 15, 2012

          Spare the Rod

Spare the women and children.
Our future resides in their wombs,
the homes they will build

from the ruins. We have bombed
our own since the Wall
was scaled, since that order

to murder the first born.
We try to find reason in madness,
teach our children to believe

in God, the laws, and we fail
for a time, then pick up
goods and ideas

and start to build again,
aided by time, that nothing
ends, just transforms.

          Journalist

What is observed, palpable,
children hiding in closets,
behind bookcases, these
are pixels in the landscape,

essential to the viewer,
to his need to fill the holes
of his empathy, to say
come into the classroom

and watch the revenger's
tragedy, listen to silence
next door where guns
reported,  hear scratching

at the knob,  sit on eyelids
of boys and girls waiting
for the murderer to walk
out, walk in, walk out.

            Indran Amirthanayagam, December 16, 2012

          Sure Thing

I am away from home. I see the human
tragedy, children lost to parents, order
upside down, inheritance uncertain,
restoring mind after grief uncertain,
forgetting details of crime scene
and return of the gun lobby after
a couple of days in black, keeping
quiet: absolute, sure, like the gun’s
silencer, the gun itself, bullets to be spent.

Alimentos, Huari, un poema

Alimentos, Huari

¿Quieres un kashki,
o tomar un punki por la tarde,
indagar en la tierra

por las carnes de cerdo,
res, gallina doradas
en las piedras

de la Pachamanca?
Me quedo con ganas
de caminar al borde

de la laguna Puruhuay
recogiendo porongos,
corriendo

como una gacela
hacia el mirador
para hacer contigo ahí

lo que la primavera
promete por todas partes
a los poetas de corazón abierto.

NO CIERREN LA CASA DE LA LITERATURA

NO CIERREN LA CASA DE LA LITERATURA

                        Indran Amirthanayagam

https://mail.google.com/mail/images/cleardot.gif

Death of a Poet by Indran Amirthanayagam

          Death of a Poet

After the poet,
who remains?
We have to fill

absence, distract
ourselves
with words

and music
until sadness
fades, and we look

to the sky,
see his face
in cumulus cloud,

shining out
of the sun,
and think

he is not
the only one
smiling

in Heaven
beckoning us
to think beyond,

the now,
what
happened

to his body
and to our
history.

For Toño Cisneros, a poem, Indran Amirthanayagam

                For Toño Cisneros

Who is Cisneros, he asks?
I don’t know. A poet
wont to drink and
a good laugh. He knew

Fitzrovia in the 60s,
spoke English
like a blue blood,
and had English

skepticism, eye
of the toad crouched
under a stone watching
the giant lizard come

tramping through
the bog. The stone
 has been turned
over,  frog dried

and pulled apart
by the forensic
artists; the work
will now be read

by others less gifted
in declamation, but
let us be grateful
that Toño never

belonged
to the academies,
He lived in Miraflores
and wrote, he said,

for two hundred
of his neighbors,
 who walk
in Parque Kennedy,

on Malecon Cisneros.

Happiness Blues, Sri Lanka, A Poem

            Happiness Blues, Sri Lanka

I don’t know what to say, my friend,
I have some blues that don’t seem right,
too light and fancy free, happiness
and all that putty you poke and pat,

grinning silly, but love is the matter
with me, I have plenty and I want
to start sharing the bounty. How lucky
can a man be, used to melancholy

and raving at the Moon about family
buried by the lagoon, who will
catch the drift along with snowflakes
in this far Northern and European town

that tried to make peace back
in the viper-ridden Vanni and failed;
yet somehow, miraculously, cousins
survived and are making their way
out of the jungle, heads held high;

and throughout the planet
family is saying this effort
to settle foundation stones
of our piece of earth will continue

until the end of time; so nobody
should rest on laurels, or dream
of bitter death, happiness
has me up tonight, generous

and lively. Are you ready
for a roll? A reading
about uncivil fools who think
blood can be washed away,

bones buried in the sand,
that everybody will forget
how one hand clapped
and white vans set off

to prowl? No, my friends,
this happiness will not
be shovelled into the back
seat or stuffed with cloth

down its throat or peppered
in the eyeballs. It will not expire
before midnight. We are
about to play--the crowd

is eager and shouting—
a post-midnight set, happiness
blues, after the reckoning,
the counting of the dead.

Grito a susurros, un poema, Indran Amirthanayagam

          Grito a susurros

a sopesar y hacer cuentas

Again on 11, a poem

Again on 11

On this--day of mourning
and grief, building resolve,
once again we have a motive--

extraordinary morning,
sky blue, parents off to work,
children to school--this time

in the African night
on the coast, in Benghazi,
rocket-fired grenades,

machine guns, bombs,
consulate on fire, ambassador
and staff killed, and all

the elaborate defenses
built in every American
post abroad and at home

questioned, how zealots,
furious, blind or organized,
can ram their horse

into the halls of Ilium,
but I have the metaphor
wrong. There are no Troys

or Ithacas left on earth,
just modern day
variations turned

to farce, men
dispossessed of reason,
ranting, misnaming God.

Juarez nos une, un poema

            Juarez nos une

Estamos a horas de la lectura
que nos salvará, lo hace
ya, de la soledad
y del temor a la muerte,

de los pequeñeces,
de ganar la ruta sobre
los demás conductores,
de coger sin pensar,

o en el momento
de regocijo retirarse
y gritar vida, hombre,
mujer y no saber

qué cosa está
burbujeando
del suelo, qué animal
deslizándose

para alimentarse
de la leche del pecho,
de la madre tierra
que hoy rebastecemos

con nuestras ofrendas:
metáforas de rosas
y granos y carne.
No voy a discutir

sobre la piedra que lanzó
Caín a su hermano,
ni el éxodo a Egipto,
o de los Tamiles ahora

arriesgando sus vidas
en botes rumbo
a Australia.

          Lectura Por Juarez

Que la tierra nos trague,
y las olas suban hasta que,
ante la costa, se vuelvan

montaña , y los peces
sean expuestos al sol,
y las lagartijas se sequen

al borde de ríos
ya hechos llanura,
y los aviones

aterricen por temor
a huracanes
que no paran de girar

siempre en los cielos
negros que vigilan
la osadía

y la ceguera
del hombre.
Hay tantos finales

que imaginamos
y solo queremos
leer poesía

en hermandad
con Ciudad Juárez
donde los maremotos

y los huracanes,
las sequias,
los temblores

han sido desviados
por la vía expresa
metafórica,

al menos hoy,
y  todos los días
cuando uno lee

y construye,
escribe y comparte
un verso, una copa

de alguna libación,
un beso, un abrazo
en tierras altas

viendo hacia abajo
como fluyen las aguas
y crecen los arboles

en los días
que le siguen
al desastre,

como esta tarde
en que leemos
de nuestros rincones

de la vida a otras plazas
y salas donde decimos,
de plantón, de verbo,

que Juárez pertenece
a nosotros,
y es lo nuestro

construir sus plazas
y casas, escuelas,
poemas.
