Sympathy
Besieged on all sides,
I have sea and death
on all sides. I don’t have
water to drink, just salt slicks,
not rice or dhal, nothing,
bombs and bullets, I am
unhappy, my son killed,
and you watching me
with sympathetic stares,
a black body in a loin cloth,
whites of eyes swinging
about my head, and I hear
wailing from other beds
and see doctors trying
to heal oozing wounds
and now earth blasted
a huge hole, a chance to run,
to what after life ?
How long will I need
to regain my calm
when cousins abroad
say even modern
life in the west
offers only guilty
cups of tea and
unbearable sympathy
from neighbors ?

Just read your poem,it has shaken me up,we as Indian's(Tamilian as well) have always raised the plight of Tamil civilians through diplomatic channels but can't exercise any other methods as we are surrounded by neighbours who want to pounce on us with respect to boundaries and moreover with the Indian National Congress(Rajiv Gandhi's wife heads the party)being at the helm of affairs it's difficult to exert to much pressue through diplomatic channels on Sri Lankan Govt and Indian elections around the corner,all politicians of Tamil Nadu are working on numbers by raising the pitch for Tamil Eelam and we are really disappointed by their behaviour.Iam making a plea as an INDIAN to all Tamilians around the world that we are trying our best through diplomatic channels but please don't have the misconception that we are biased,please understand that we are surronded by neighbours(western and eastern borders) who want to kill the idea of INDIA.
I appreciate your comment and welcome all efforts to stop this conflict. There are more poems I can show you too if interested. Despite Auden's line that poetry makes nothing happen I believe it enables us to speak about unspeakable matters. All the Best.
